I had always thought that Nutella seemed like a nutritious alternative for those who are allergic to peanuts. Then I read the food label. I was so disappointed! The first ingredient is sugar, then palm oil, hazelnuts, cocoa, skim milk, Lecithin, whey (milk), and artificial Vanilla (Vanillin). There is only one gram of fiber and 21 grams of sugar. I was so disappointed when I realized that this product is not that nearly as healthy as I thought.
Well, I’m pretty excited because I just found the most delicious looking homemade Nutella recipe. All the recipe calls for is 1 cup dark chocolate chips, and 1 cup unsalted almonds or hazelnuts. Chocolate is an EXCELLENT source of iron and magnesium as well as antioxidants, and nuts are also excellent sources of minerals and fiber. The recipe says to roast the nuts for about 5 minutes at 350 degrees. Put in a food processor while still warm. Then add the chocolate chips and process until creamy, 10-20 minutes. This recipe is not lower in calories, but it most definitely IS richer in nutrients and lower in sugar.
