US Geography – Sorting Mats (post contains affiliate links).

I am on my 6th year of homeschooling my son. One thing that has become apparent over the years is how much more effective hands-on learning is with him. Not only is it more fun, but it doesn’t require as much learning.

My son has struggled with verbal and written communication since he started kindergarten. However, he is able to talk well–when he wants to, so the verbal communication struggles were hidden until he reached adolescence.

He was diagnosed with ADHD and developmental coordination disorder in first grade. However, he wasn’t diagnosed with Autism until the summer of 2018. (He was 13 and getting ready to start 8th grade).

In the meantime, I was learning through trial and error what worked and what didn’t. He is more mature now. So, he is more willing to write his ideas down. However, even at 15, it is still an incredible chore for him to do any kind of lengthy writing.

Anyone who has studied history and other social studies realizes that learning the facts usually involves a lot of reading and writing.

This is why I find Randi Smith’s Sorting Mats to be incredibly helpful resources for supplementing my son’s education.

Once you realize that Randi is a Speech Language Pathologist by profession, you will begin to understand why she has chosen to create these materials. Students with communication struggles, whether they be verbal or non-verbal, will benefit by using these resources.

Of course, even if your child doesn’t struggle with communication, he can learn by this method. Younger children who are still at the concrete stage will also benefit.

The reason I’m bringing this up is because she has contributed one of her awesome products to this year’s Build Your Bundle. Last year we purchased her 50 US Presidents sorting mats, which we completed at the end of last year and the beginning of this school year.

We are currently working through another of her sorting mat projects which I will discuss in another post. However, today I want to briefly discuss her product and the other complementary products in the American Studies Bundle.

The American Studies Bundle includes 9 separate products devoted to the USA, including US Elections, US Presidents, US Geography, and all 50 states.

If you are a homeschooler or are teaching at home, you owe it to yourself to check out the Build Your Bundle Sale. In all of the years I have been homeschooling, I have yet to find a better deal on curriculum then during this one week period in Mary.

Click the links to visit the Build Your Bundle page to learn more.  (Though these links focus on Social Studies and History, you will find all subjects and grade levels)..
